Marinos Koutsomichalis (Athens, Greece 1981 - ) sound-artist, composer.
His main focus is on the
architectural possibilities of sound - how to occupy or
interpret space in meaninful ways or how to upgrade a
site into a more functional and ergonomic one - this
has nothing to do with opinion, belief or
self-expression. Usually in his works music references
are overwhelmed or absent for the shake of sound alone
which is no longer the carrier of an artificial planted
'meaning' or 'message' but the very transcendent goal
itself.
Occasionally, he composes for acoustic instruments and
orchestras or is into various side-projects. His work
(through concerts, live performances, installations or
radio broadcasts) has been presented in many countries
around the globe - in small independent spaces and
festivals, in academies as well as in concert halls and
auditoriums. It has been also released by british
Ent'acte, greel EchoMusic and his own ΑΓΧΙΒΑΤΕΙΝ.
He is a canditate Ph.D. in music composition in the
university of York (under the supervision of dr Tony
Myatt) and holds a MA in composition with digital media
by the same university. He also holds degrees in
harmony and counterpoint and in business
administration. He is member of the Center of
Contemporary Music Reseach (Athens, founded by I.
Xenakis), the Hellenic Electracoustic Music Composers
Association (Greece), the Acoustic Ecology Institute
(Santa Fe), the Ear to The Earth organization (New
York) and of the Sound and Music Network (London).
