Anotropia (*tendency of the eyes to turn upward and away from the visual axis) interrogates the materiality of the violin through live sound processing. A violinist is asked to execute a score in front of a microphone while an unattended computer manipulates the input audio in real time to drive 5 loudspeakers that are positioned asymmetrically in space. The computer runs bespoke software programmed by the artist that relies largely on spectral processing and convolution techniques to foreground and further build upon unexpected aspects in the violin’s (and the violinist’s) sound/texture.
