Incertitudes
Incertitudes
Incertitudes are a series of handmade articles/ornaments that explore extempore metalsmithing. Embracing process-driven design, Incertitudes broadly pivot on an intuitive and spontaneous crafting informed on one hand by the physical characteristics of metals and, on the other, by accident, unconditional experimentation, slapdash making, and even lack of skill.
Materials:
Gold (18K, 14K), silver (925, 850), titanium (grade 1), copper, brass, bronze, aluminium, stainless steel, mild carbon steel, niobium, 四分一, zirconium, iron, tantalum, bismuth, basalt, shellac

Incertitudes explore plasticity, ductility, elasticity, abrasivity, hardness, resilience, tensile strength, chemical/heat reactivity, and stiffness in metals while they celebrate an improvised and playful approach to metalsmithing. In doing so, rudimentary aspects of working with metal (annealing, melting, cutting, forging, folding, oxidising, etc) are creatively interrogated in depth. Incertitudes are predominantly concerned with a number of distinct themes and creative veins; ones that are, nevertheless, more often than not simultaneously relevant to an article. Namely, with:
Hues; that is, the reactive colouration of metals through natural oxidation or in an accelerated fashion (e.g., employing chemical solutions, heat, fire, or electricity).
Juxtapositions; that is, the poetics of bringing eclectic elements together in playful oppositions, and hybrid/contrapuntal materialities.
Joints; that is, the coupling of distinct parts so as to delineate radical geometries and intractable surfaces.
Folds/Contours; most notably informed by the principles of foldforming as laid out by Lewton-Brain, but also generally concerned with the forging, pulling, shaping, and deformation of metals.
Residues: that is, subtracting material off a monolithic piece of metal (e.g. by means of carving, grinding, drilling, etc).
Casts: that is, pouring liquid metal to some substrate or mold.
